Short summary An SME based in Spain is seeking a partner SME for the Eureka-Eurostars call that closes on the 13th of April. that can work in the integration of optical with electronics in their communication systems. This could be done by using discrete optical components, or by using a photonic integrated circuit. The project is seeking at solving whether 5G, nor 6G can address this need. They have a TRL4 prototype.

Full description Until 2020 mobile applications were run on mobile phones, tablets, or watches. All applications were treated as mobile apps, they were not segmented. Now the industry has divided mobile applications into 3 types: 1. Requiring a very high amount of data traffic. (i.e., holographic screens) 2. Requiring very low time delay in data transmission. (i.e., online gaming) 3. Requiring a very high concentration of devices in a specific area (i.e., sensor applications) Also, a new type of appliance is being used now, glasses, and helmets, Depending on the type of application. The Project proposed for partnership is about a new technology in the communication between mobile appliances and mobile core networks that will address the needs of the first type out of the three types of applications listed above. That is, we have new apps coming up, and new appliances, and now through this project it is proposed a new communication technology that will better serve the new apps and new appliances. The needs for this type of application are: 1. Much more traffic per user. 2. Much more traffic for all users added up. Needs 1 and 2 seem similar but they are different, and they cannot be addressed in radio frequencies, but they can be addressed in optical frequencies. There is proof that the project approach is good: 1. There are good academic reports on the technical proposal. 2. There is a TRL4 prototype on the technical proposal. 3. In optical frequencies there is much more bandwidth available than in radio frequencies. 4. Optical spectrum can be easily reused while doing so for radio spectrum is much more complex. The Spanish SME is looking for another SME to apply to is Eurostars-Eureka. Eurostars is part of the European Partnership on Innovative SMEs. The partnership is co-funded by the European Union through Horizon Europe, the rest of the financing comes from national funding. Funding conditions are different depending on the country, the information for each country can be found here: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/. Regarding the partnership, there is one of the largest R&D public research European institutions that will be the provider of a special type of light source subsystem for our transmission systems. There is a private R&D institution that will be running software demos regarding that specific light source subsystem to determine its limits before coming up with a hardware implementation of the product. There is a non-profit European organization that will be in charge of transposing the designs on programmable hardware (FPGAs) into electrical chips. There is a public Spanish research organization that will be in charge of transposing the designs on programmable hardware (FPGAs) into electrical chips. • Agreements that we still need to come up with: 1. The SME is in search of a partner working on designing a printed circuit board for high-frequency circuits design, at 2Ghz without losses. 2. The SME is in search of a partner working on optical subsystem integration with our electrical/processing circuits to create our transmitter and receiver. Or it could be integrating a photonic integrated circuit with our electrical/processing circuits. The project will last 18 months.

  • Those advantages are needed to be used in applications eMBB. The figure included in ANNEX 1 illustrates the three areas of mobile applications segmentation, and are as follows:
  • eMMB applications: Applications requiring huge amount of bandwidth.
  • URLLC applications: Applications requiring low latency networks.
  • mMTC applications: Applications requiring a high space concentration of remote mobile devices.
  • New eMMB applications will require huge data rates for each mobile device connected to the network:
  • Holography screens will require more than 1Tbps data rate per connected device.
  • Augmented realty with retina quality will require 500Mbps per connected user. In applications for Industry 4.0 where there will be a large amount of connected users data rate needs are huge and need to be addressed with a technology like ours.
