INVERGRID - INCREASING MANAGEABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY OF FUTURE ELECTRIC GREEN GRID

Stato: Not Approved
Data di creazione: 19-02-2020

Obbiettivi del progetto:

The objective of INVERGRID is to design, simulate, develop, demonstrate, test and validate a new way of managing digitalized electric grids with high shares of RES through improved hybrid battery storage systems and EVs and enhance the prosumer model based on the virtual interconnection of resources in nearly zero emissions microgrids.

The project will develop solutions from TRL4 to TRL6 and demonstrate how hybridization of battery storage systems can optimize:

  • Provision of services in island grids
  • Provision of services in weak distribution grids
  • Provision of services in private grids, such as industrial parks
  • Provision of load levelling for EV charging service stations.

INVERGRID will utilize hybrid energy storage systems, which consist the cornerstone of the proposed solution. Early in the project, research will focus on the optimization of these hybrid systems aiming at decreasing their cost and dependency on critical and unsustainable raw materials.

The project will also be based on smart devices, a general coordination management system and hierarchical interconnected components and loads, paying special attention to all aspects around privacy, security and resilience to potential cyberattacks.

A key innovation in this project is the concept of inverting grid management. This is achieved by converting loads into the actively managed part of the system with generation being the stochastic part of the equation matching the two. This idea enforces the prosumer model and inverts the way in which resources are managed achieving a more flexible, secure, resilient and efficient system.

At a later stage, the hybrid battery systems and the inverted grid management approach will be tested and validated at CENER’s smart grid lab environment before it’s installed at a real world demonstration at an industrial park next to CENER in Pamplona (Spain).

Based on the regulatory, market and locational system characteristics of the demonstration, innovative business models that provide as many services across the energy system as possible will be designed and tested, also considering local markets for peer-to-peer trading. In addition to this, barriers to innovation and market uptake will be identified and addressed.
