Croatian university department with expertise in analysing environmental contaminants is looking for consortia to join for applying to Horizon Europe calls or other collaborative projects related to Green Deal

Full description The department is a part of one of the most widely recognized scientific and higher education institutions in Croatia, established in 1955. In the field of scientific research, this institution is the center of the biomedical and interdisciplinary research in accordance with the European concept of “smart specialisation”. They are directed towards applied and applicable science in everyday medical practice, as well as towards the field of translational research in medicine. The department has access to state-of-the-art analytical equipment for detecting and quantifying chemical, physical, and biological contaminants in different environmental compartments (water, soil, atmosphere). Besides being able to assess traditional contaminants routinely analysed in the environment, recently the department has acquired the methodology and “know-how” for detecting emerging contaminants. Emerging contaminants are chemicals that are still not regulated, and about which there exist some preliminary data which raises concerns regarding their impact on human or environmental health. If needed, the department is able to introduce novel and breakthrough methods for detecting a broad spectrum of emerging contaminants in different environmental compartments. The management team has extensive experience in the management and implementation of national and EU-funded projects, including research projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, Horizon 2020 and INTERREG calls.

Advantages and innovations The department offers the analysis of biological, chemical, and physical contaminants in several environmental compartments. As stated, besides traditional contaminants, the department has the necessary “know-how” to address emerging contaminants and perform environmental and health risk assessments based on the results of the analysis performed. In addition, a tangential field that the department has experience in is the coupling large sets of different indicators of environmental quality and environmental performance by industries and integrating them into composite indicators.
