Full description This Greek entrepreneur has built up significant and expert know-how for the application of specialised coatings with multi-functional characteristics - both flame-retardant and smoke suppression, as well as antibacterial properties. Flame retardants are chemical compounds that prevent ignition and/or retard burning in polymers. They can be added to various materials such as wood, but also plastics, during the manufacturing process. There are two general categories of flame retardant: halogen-based and halogen-free. While halogen-based flame retardants are very effective at preventing smoke and flame, evidence suggests that halogen-free flame retardants are safer for people and the environment. Metal hydroxides are the largest volume halogen-free flame retardants used worldwide. The two most widely used are aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide. When exposed to heat, they decompose to form aluminum or magnesium oxide and release water molecules in an endothermic reaction. This results in reduced flame spread and decreased smoke generation. Halogen-free flame retardants also offer a host of additional benefits. They are non-toxic, non-corrosive, inert, non-volatile and economical, all while reducing smoke density and providing environmentally-friendly fire retardation. Because they are cost-effective and less harmful to the environment, they are rapidly replacing halogen-based flame retardants. The Greek client has acquired all the relevant academic qualifications (for example a doctorate in colour chemistry from a renowned UK university), and has been working in the specialised field of industrial chemical treatments and applications at an international level for over 30 years. The company is now offering its expertise and know-how in order to provide an effective technique for applying these specialised coatings. The company is also certified with ISO 22196:2011 (the EU standard for the measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces). The Greek entrepreneur is interested in setting up commercial agreements with technical assistance and is particularly keen on finding potential manufacturing partners in Asia. Through such an agreement, the partner would be able to differentiate its products from the competitors, offering market advantages, added value and unique selling points.

It is also suitable for use on medium density fibreboard (MDF) surfaces. The flame-retardant treatment results in surfaces becoming less flammable and combustion blocking, thus improving their safety and reducing the potentially harmful impact on humans through smoke inhalation. The coated products also exhibit excellent antimicrobial properties and obtained a 99.99% antibacterial rate for both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). This coating technique is suitable for highly demanding applications, ensuring maximum results and long product technical life.
