HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-02-02: A consortium search an electric vehicles (EVs) manufacturer company (cars, buses and trucks) to test batteries in their own produced EVs.

Stato: Idea
Data di creazione: 20-01-2023

Obbiettivi del progetto:

Short summary A consortium, coordinated by a Spanish R&D organization, knowing the problems related to the safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the development of high-performance and safer next-generation batteries, is preparing a proposal for HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-02-02. In addition, the combination of simulations with experimental data will serve to improve the final cell. They look for an electric vehicles manufacturer to test the batteries developed in the project.

Full description The safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is one of the main obstacles restricting the development of electric vehicles (EVs). Improved safety and implemented preventive safety measures are of great significance to the popularization of EVs. This project aims to develop high performance, and safer, next generation batteries by informed modification of differing cell components, namely advanced cathode and coatings thereof, novel anode architecture, advanced electrolytes, binders and separators. Combining simulations with experimental data it will be possible to understand the phenomenon compromising the cell safety and dive into various battery design scenarios pointing out important aspects that needs to be consider to improve the final cell and fed the results onto the development of the new battery components. This proposal will be submitted to Horizon Europe Program, for the topic HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-02-02. The deadline is fixed by de 5th of September 2023. The duration of the project is estimated in 36 months. In the consortium there are partners who have extensive experience in the “modification of cell components”, in the “texting and experimental data” and the “simulation and modelling”. It is necessary, in order to achieve the objectives of the project, to have an end user who is a manufacturer of electric vehicles (mainly cars but also trucks and buses) and who tests the solutions developed in the project on their own produced electric vehicles. The deadline to respond to this “expression of interests” is 15th of February, the date on which the consortium must be closed.

Advantages and innovations
  • The innovation of the project is based on predicting, through the combination of an experimental and simulation approach, internal short circuits and the propagation of short circuit faults when mechanical abuse conditions are applied to the battery cells, developing multiphysics simulation models that allow predicting the behaviour of the cells under different real abuse scenarios that can compromise their security.
  • The impact on the market is directly reflected in the economic impact, which can be very high by reducing the problems caused by batteries and increasing the sale of electric vehicles, which implies, at the same time, a great environmental impact by reducing the footprint carbon compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles. On a social level, the impact of the project will be very positive because it will improve the safety of the vehicles themselves and their occupants
