Short summary A Spanish SME offers its expertise and skills in innovative and functional materials and/or processes, chemical and industrial engineering, advanced material-based technologies supported by eco-design and safe-by-design performance, recycling and end of life solutions, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Social LCA, to participate as a subcontracted party (through research, technical or commercial agreement) in the M-ERA.NET 2022 joint call.

Full description Environmental Engineering Consultancy SME, located in Valencia, Spain, is offering its knowledge and expertise to participate as a subcontracted partner within the M-ERA.NET 2022 joint call projects, providing support to meet the sustainability criteria addressed for the targeted technologies and/or materials, and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for affordable and innovative clean energy storage technologies and infrastructures. With a multidisciplinary and transversal approach, the Spanish SME has matured a specific expertise in assessing the sustainability criteria of innovative energy storage and industrial applications, and improving the efficiency of batteries-related technologies, through the whole value chain (from raw materials supply to end-of-life performances). The Spanish SME expertise is endorsed by their contribution in several European Projects: ASTRABAT focusing on conducting Eco-design, environmental and economic assessment, and recyclability analysis to optimize a new battery prototype for electric vehicles; i-HeCoBatt which aims to improve the efficiency of battery and energy storage related technologies supported by Eco-design, LCA, LCC and leading the Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation activities to support the integration of the social, ethical and political dimensions and reflect the societal needs; CROCODILE project which develops innovative industrial recovery processes of cobalt material integrating a complete material, business, and economic flow analysis; and HYBRIS project, leading the sustainability requirements and materials efficiency and safety to develop an innovative battery based on hybrid storage system. In order to promote and cluster the application of different material and technology-based solutions, the SME is an active member of a wide range of relevant platforms and networks: i.e. European Innovation Partnership (EIP) in Raw Materials; COST ACTION CRM-EXTREME: Solutions for Critical Raw Materials Under Extreme Conditions; the Partnership for Advanced Materials for Batteries – AMBP, framed within the Smart Specialisation Platform (S3P); MANUKET, the Spanish Technological Platform for Advanced Manufacturing, MATERPLAT, Advanced Materials and Nanomaterials Spanish Technological Platform, and BATTERYPLAT, the Spanish Technological Platform for Batteries and energy storage. Through research and technological cooperation or commercial agreement the SME offers its technical assistance in supporting transnational M-ERA.NET joint projects, providing the following services: o Eco-design recommendations (ISO 14062, ISO 14006) to integrate sustainability and safe criteria in novel materials, substances, and processes from the early stages; o Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) analysis to quantify the environmental and economic impact of innovative materials, substances, and processes, according to ISO 14040 and 14044, and to reduce the critical supplies, potential risks while improving the sustainability and efficiency; o Recommendation Guidelines for Materials Safety, supporting the substitution of CRM and the efficient and sustainable supply of raw materials; o Recyclability analysis, according to the Recycling Efficiency Commission Regulation (EU) 493/2012; o Circular economy modelling, to promote the generation of innovative circular business models and applications, and to strengthen the industrial symbiosis and its synergies between academia and research; o Guidance in socio-ecological communication to spread the positive results of a sustainable solution and to promote an integrative knowledge transfer to different types of stakeholders; o Compliance with certification and standardisation schemes: Eco-labelling, Carbon Footprint Declaration; o Clustering and Network activities with key stakeholders and European initiatives on new materials and energy related technologies.

Advantages and innovations The multidisciplinary and wide experience of the Spanish SME contributing to the sustainability assessment and technology transfer is reinforced by their specific involvement in projects and networks working with the latest technologies and functional materials in terms of batteries and energy storage. Eco-design and Safe-by-Design, LCA, LCC, social LCA, and recyclability analysis, are top methodologies used in R&D innovative projects to quantify the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the materials and processes involved in the research. However, experience is required to integrate these methodologies to each project with specific know-how and internal protocols, to finally obtain feasible and minimum impact results. This is specifically the added value of the services offered by the Spanish SME, which is also part of strategic networks and platforms addressed to the target priorities defined for the N-ERA.NET. The team has expertise in understanding the functional materials and energy storage technologies along the entire value chain: from raw materials extraction and supply, the production and manufacturing, to the use phase, disposal and end-of-life scenarios. Its expertise also encompasses the knowledge of the regulations and standards regarding the sustainable and efficient batteries, such as the new proposal for a European Regulation in batteries and wastes batteries promoting transparent material sourcing, transition to electro-mobility technologies, carbon neutral energy storage, as well as the European Commission Sustainable Development Goals, which avoid as far as possible the use of hazardous chemicals and compounds and demonstrate the integration of safe performances; and other European Strategies as the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET) to foster for cost-competitive low carbon energy technologies.
